Hope Hospital was founded by the Reformed Church in America mission on Kulangsu in 1898, beside the Wilhelmina Hospital supported by the Dutch Queen. The photographs gathered here record that world — the hospital campus, its wards and operating rooms; the Nurses’ Home completed in 1933 and the nurses trained there; the missionaries who served across South Fujian; and the island’s mission cemetery, where burials were recorded from 1842 to 1949.
Each collection below gathers the photographs of one institution or one community. Many come from mission archives and family albums, and many are still being identified — names, dates, and captions are added as the research continues.
